Actio libera in causa is the realisation of a decision made in a reasonable state by a will which, although not directly attributable as a result of self-inflicted insanity, is from the outset also to be regarded as the realisation of the first attributable will.

Actio libera in causa ist Verwirklichung des in einem zurechnungsfähigen Zustande gefassten Entschlusses durch einen Willen, der infolge selbstverschuldeter Unzurechnungsfähigkeit zwar nicht direkt zurechenbar ist, der aber von vorneherein auch als Verwirklichung des ersten zurechenbaren Willens gelten soll.
