The keeper of an animal is the one who permanently benefits from the animal or, in case it would shed such, would benefit from it, i.e. who, in his own interest, permanently grants the animal the conditions of existence. The pet owner is not necessarily also the owner of the animal.

Der Tierhalter ist derjenige, der dauernd vom Tier den Nutzen zieht oder, für den Fall, dass es solchen abwerfen würde, ihn ziehen würde, also wer ihm aus eigenem Interesse dauernd die Existenzbedingungen gewährt. Der Tierhalter ist nicht notwendigerweise auch der Eigentümer des Tieres.
