An artwork is defined as a unique, aesthetically successful product created by an artist. The format and image may be chosen freely. The quality of the artwork is publicly evaluated by art critics and art historians. Artworks are usually displayed in museums or galleries but may also be privately owned and therefore not open to public viewing. While art museums collect artworks in order to display them to the public, galleries are sales outlets which dispose of artworks to public or private collectors.

Ein Kunstwerk definiert sich als einzigartiges und ästhetisch gelungenes Produkt eines Künstlers. Das Format und die Darstellung sind dabei frei wählbar. Das Kunstwerk wird in seiner Qualität durch die Kunstkritiker und Kunsthistoriker öffentlich bewertet. Das Kunstwerk wird in der Regel in Museen oder Galerien gezeigt, kann aber auch in Privatbesitz sein und somit unzugänglich für die Öffentlichkeit. Während Museen der Künste Sammlungen von Kunstwerken anlegen, um diese der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen, sind Galerien Verkaufsräume der Kunst, in denen es um den Abverkauf der gezeigten Werke an öffentliche oder private Sammler geht.
