An index is a static performance indicator which reflects the performance of numerous valued financial instruments. Most indices are share indices. In these cases, the index rate published represents the current prices in the share pool. The individual prices of these investments (index constituents) are usually weighted for example according to stock market capitalisation and added together; the total is the value of the index. Index changes act as barometers for certain markets.

Ein Index ist eine statistische Kennzahl, welche einen Korb voller bewerteter Finanzinstrumente wiedergibt. Die meisten Indizes sind Aktienindizes. Hier stellt der publizierte Indexkurs den zu aktuellen Preisen bewerteten Aktienkorb dar. Die einzelnen Kurse dieser Anlage (Indexbestandteile) werden, meist nach einer bestimmten Gewichtung wie z.B. der Börsenkapitalisierung addiert und ergeben als Total den Wert des Index. Veränderungen des Index agieren als Barometer für bestimmte Märkte.
