The Independent Commission of Experts, set up by parliament in 1996 under the historian Jean-François Bergier, examined Switzerland's role between 1933 and 1945. It was granted access to bank archives and presented a final report in 25 volumes in 2002. It criticised in particular the restrictive refugee policy, the National Bank's gold transactions with the Reichsbank, and the failure to return dormant assets. The report triggered a broad debate on the country's past and lastingly changed Switzerland's self-image.

Die 1996 vom Parlament eingesetzte Unabhängige Expertenkommission (UEK) unter dem Historiker Jean-François Bergier untersuchte die Rolle der Schweiz zwischen 1933 und 1945. Sie erhielt Zugang zu Bankarchiven und legte 2002 einen Schlussbericht in 25 Bänden vor. Sie kritisierte namentlich die restriktive Flüchtlingspolitik, die Goldtransaktionen der Nationalbank mit der Reichsbank und die Nichtrückgabe nachrichtenloser Vermögen. Der Bericht löste eine breite geschichtspolitische Debatte aus und veränderte das schweizerische Selbstbild nachhaltig.
