The best-in-class approach is the investment strategy of selecting, within each sector, those companies that perform best against ESG criteria. No sector is excluded from the outset; relative leadership is rewarded. The approach preserves diversification and creates incentives for improvement, but is criticised because companies in controversial sectors remain investable; it is therefore frequently combined with exclusion criteria.

Der Best-in-Class-Ansatz ist die Anlagestrategie, bei der innerhalb jeder Branche jene Unternehmen ausgewählt werden, die gemessen an ESG-Kriterien am besten abschneiden. Keine Branche wird von vornherein ausgeschlossen; belohnt wird der relative Vorsprung. Der Ansatz erhält die Diversifikation und setzt Anreize zur Verbesserung, wird aber kritisiert, weil auch Unternehmen kontroverser Branchen investierbar bleiben; deshalb wird er häufig mit Ausschlusskriterien kombiniert.
