Carbon offsetting

Carbon offsetting is the compensation of greenhouse gas emissions caused by financing emission reductions or removals elsewhere, evidenced by certificates. The CO2 Act obliges, in particular, importers of fossil motor fuels to offset part of the emissions; voluntary offsetting relies on private standards such as Gold Standard or Verra. Quality requirements are additionality, permanence and the avoidance of double counting, regulated internationally by Art. 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Die CO2-Kompensation ist der Ausgleich verursachter Treibhausgasemissionen durch Finanzierung von Emissionsverminderungen oder -entnahmen an anderer Stelle, nachgewiesen durch Zertifikate. Das CO2-Gesetz verpflichtet namentlich die Importeure fossiler Treibstoffe zur Kompensation eines Teils der Emissionen; freiwillige Kompensation nutzt private Standards wie Gold Standard oder Verra. Qualitätsanforderungen sind Zusätzlichkeit, Dauerhaftigkeit und Vermeidung von Doppelzählung, international geregelt durch Art. 6 des Übereinkommens von Paris.
