Consumer cooperative

Consumer cooperatives arose in the nineteenth century as self-help organisations of workers and the lower middle class against excessive food prices; the Union of Swiss Consumer Societies, later Coop, was founded in 1890. Gottlieb Duttweiler founded Migros in 1925 as a joint-stock company and converted it into a cooperative in 1941, transferring the capital to his customers. Both firms dominate Swiss retailing today; their cooperative structure with assemblies of delegates is increasingly debated as a governance question.

Konsumgenossenschaften entstanden im 19. Jahrhundert als Selbsthilfeorganisationen von Arbeitern und Kleinbürgern gegen überhöhte Lebensmittelpreise; der Verband schweizerischer Konsumvereine, später Coop, wurde 1890 gegründet. Gottlieb Duttweiler gründete 1925 die Migros als Aktiengesellschaft und wandelte sie 1941 in eine Genossenschaft um, deren Kapital er den Kunden übertrug. Beide Unternehmen dominieren heute den schweizerischen Detailhandel; ihre genossenschaftliche Struktur mit Delegiertenversammlungen wird zunehmend als Governance-Frage diskutiert.
