Gotthard railway

Opened in 1882, the Gotthard railway with its fifteen-kilometre summit tunnel was the first rail link between northern and southern Europe through the Alps. It was financed by the Gotthard Railway Company with the participation of the Confederation, Germany and Italy; construction cost the lives of around 200 workers. The line made Switzerland a European transit country, promoted industry and tourism, and founded the Alpine transit policy that leads through the Gotthard road tunnel to the NRLA and the Gotthard Base Tunnel opened in 2016.

Die 1882 eröffnete Gotthardbahn mit ihrem 15 Kilometer langen Scheiteltunnel verband erstmals Nord- und Südeuropa auf der Schiene durch die Alpen. Finanziert wurde sie von der Gotthardbahn-Gesellschaft unter Beteiligung des Bundes sowie Deutschlands und Italiens; der Bau kostete rund 200 Arbeiter das Leben. Die Bahn machte die Schweiz zum europäischen Transitland, förderte Industrie und Tourismus und begründete die Alpentransitpolitik, die über den Gotthard-Strassentunnel bis zur NEAT und zum 2016 eröffneten Gotthard-Basistunnel führt.
