Nationalisation of the railways

After the private railway construction of the 1850s and 1860s had produced overcapacity, speculation and bankruptcies, a popular movement demanded nationalisation. The Repurchase Act was approved in 1898 by almost 68 per cent of voters, and on 1 January 1902 the five large private companies were merged into the Swiss Federal Railways. Nationalisation secured uniform tariffs, an integrated network and public service provision, and is regarded as the foundation of Switzerland's dense rail traffic.

Nach dem privatwirtschaftlichen Eisenbahnbau der 1850er- und 1860er-Jahre, der zu Überkapazitäten, Spekulation und Konkursen führte, verlangte eine Volksbewegung die Verstaatlichung. Das Rückkaufsgesetz wurde 1898 in der Volksabstimmung mit fast 68 Prozent angenommen; auf den 1. Januar 1902 gingen die fünf grossen Privatbahnen in den Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen auf. Die Verstaatlichung sicherte einheitliche Tarife, ein integriertes Netz und den Service public und gilt als Grundstein des dichten schweizerischen Bahnverkehrs.
