Reinsurance is the insurance by which an insurer (the principal or primary insurer) allows für to have another (the reinsurer) promise partial or complete coverage for the payment obligations assumed towards an insured party.

Die Rückversicherung ist diejenige Versicherung, durch welche ein Versicherer (der Haupt- oder Erstversicherer) sich für die einem Versicherten gegenüber übernommenen Zahlungsverpflichtung von einem andern (dem Rückversicherer) eine teilweise oder ganze Deckung versprechen lässt.
