Rejection of the EEA

On 6 December 1992 Swiss voters rejected accession to the European Economic Area by 50.3 per cent and a clear majority of cantons, on a record turnout of 78 per cent. The decision ended the accession process towards the European Union that had been initiated and forced Switzerland onto the bilateral path. It also triggered a wave of economic reform: a new cartel act, an internal market act and deregulation were to secure competitiveness without the EEA.

Am 6. Dezember 1992 lehnte das Schweizer Stimmvolk den Beitritt zum Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum mit 50,3 Prozent und einer klaren Mehrheit der Stände ab, bei einer Rekordbeteiligung von 78 Prozent. Der Entscheid beendete den eingeleiteten EU-Beitrittsprozess und zwang die Schweiz auf den bilateralen Weg. Er löste zugleich einen wirtschaftlichen Reformschub aus: Kartellgesetz, Binnenmarktgesetz und Deregulierungen sollten die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit ohne EWR sichern.
