Self-defence is defence against an attack in the sense of an action of another living being controlled by the instinct of injury. Self-defence is regarded as the permitted form of self-help and can be defined as the moderate defence against an unlawful attack against a legal interest.

Die Notwehr ist Verteidigung gegen einen Angriff im Sinne einer vom Verletzungstrieb gesteuerten Aktion eines anderen Lebewesens. Die Notwehr gilt als die erlaubte Form der Selbsthilfe und kann als die massvolle Abwehr gegen einen nicht rechtmässigen Angriff gegen ein Rechtsgut definiert werden.
