Switzerland as an industrial location

The term denotes industrial value creation in Switzerland, in particular the machinery, electrical and metal industries, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, and precision manufacturing. Despite high wages and a strong franc, industry accounts for around a fifth of value added, an unusually high share for a high-wage country. This is explained by specialisation in niches, innovative strength, dual vocational training and productivity. The risks are relocation, a shortage of skilled workers and impeded access to the EU internal market.

Der Begriff Werkplatz Schweiz bezeichnet die industrielle Wertschöpfung im Land, insbesondere die Maschinen-, Elektro- und Metallindustrie, die Pharma- und Chemiebranche sowie die Präzisionsindustrie. Trotz hoher Löhne und starkem Franken hält die Industrie einen für ein Hochlohnland ungewöhnlichen Anteil von rund einem Fünftel der Wertschöpfung. Erklärt wird dies mit Spezialisierung auf Nischen, Innovationskraft, dualer Berufsbildung und Produktivität. Risiken sind Abwanderung, Fachkräftemangel und der erschwerte Zugang zum EU-Binnenmarkt.
