An application programming interface is a defined interface through which two software systems exchange data and invoke functions. In finance it is the technical basis of open banking and embedded finance: through it third parties obtain account information or initiate payments. Open interfaces lower integration costs and enable new business models, while shifting questions of security and data protection to the interface itself. In Switzerland the lack of standardisation is the greatest obstacle.

Eine Programmierschnittstelle ist eine definierte Schnittstelle, über die zwei Softwaresysteme Daten austauschen und Funktionen aufrufen können. Im Finanzbereich ist sie die technische Grundlage von Open Banking und Embedded Finance: Über sie beziehen Drittanbieter Kontoinformationen oder lösen Zahlungen aus. Offene Schnittstellen senken die Integrationskosten und ermöglichen neue Geschäftsmodelle; zugleich verlagern sie Fragen der Sicherheit und des Datenschutzes an die Schnittstelle. In der Schweiz ist die fehlende Standardisierung das grösste Hindernis.
