The blockchain is a decentrally maintained database in which transactions are grouped into blocks, cryptographically chained together and jointly validated by the network participants; subsequent alterations are thereby practically excluded. Having become known as the technical foundation of Bitcoin, the technology is today used far beyond it, for instance for smart contracts, tokenised assets and ledger-based securities under Art. 973d CO.

Die Blockchain ist eine dezentral geführte Datenbank, in der Transaktionen zu Blöcken zusammengefasst, kryptographisch miteinander verkettet und von den Netzwerkteilnehmern gemeinsam validiert werden; nachträgliche Änderungen sind dadurch praktisch ausgeschlossen. Bekannt geworden als technisches Fundament von Bitcoin, wird die Technologie heute weit darüber hinaus eingesetzt, etwa für Smart Contracts, tokenisierte Vermögenswerte und Registerwertrechte nach Art. 973d OR.
