Central bank digital currency

Central bank digital currency is money issued by the central bank in electronic form. A distinction is drawn between retail variants for the general public and wholesale variants for financial institutions. The Swiss National Bank rejects a retail version: it would bring little benefit, threaten the banks' role in lending and raise questions of data protection. A wholesale version, by contrast, it is testing in Project Helvetia for the settlement of tokenised securities.

Digitales Zentralbankgeld ist von der Notenbank herausgegebenes Geld in elektronischer Form. Zu unterscheiden sind Retail-Varianten für die Allgemeinheit und Wholesale-Varianten für Finanzinstitute. Die Schweizerische Nationalbank lehnt ein Retail-Zentralbankgeld ab: Es brächte wenig Nutzen, bedrohte die Rolle der Banken in der Kreditvergabe und würfe Fragen des Datenschutzes auf. Ein Wholesale-Zentralbankgeld hingegen erprobt sie im Projekt Helvetia für die Abwicklung tokenisierter Effekten.
