A caucus is the mediator's confidential meeting with one party alone during the mediation. It serves to absorb emotions, clarify hidden interests and negotiation limits, or break deadlocks. Its content may be brought into the joint session only with the consent of the party concerned. As a rule the mediator holds caucuses with both sides in order to preserve multipartiality.

Das Einzelgespräch (Caucus) ist die vertrauliche Besprechung des Mediators mit nur einer Partei während der Mediation. Es dient dazu, Emotionen aufzufangen, verdeckte Interessen und Verhandlungsgrenzen zu klären oder festgefahrene Situationen zu lösen. Inhalte dürfen nur mit Zustimmung der betreffenden Partei in die gemeinsame Sitzung eingebracht werden. Der Mediator führt Einzelgespräche grundsätzlich mit beiden Seiten, um die Allparteilichkeit zu wahren.
