Cotton industry

The cotton industry was the engine of Switzerland's early industrialisation. Out of the putting-out trade of eastern Switzerland and the Zurich Oberland, mechanised spinning mills arose after 1800, favoured by water power, cheap labour and the Continental System, which kept English competition out. Around 1830 Switzerland was the second-largest cotton processor in Europe after Britain. Decline set in with cheap imports and the First World War; today the sector has all but disappeared, apart from niches such as technical textiles.

Die Baumwollindustrie war der Motor der schweizerischen Frühindustrialisierung. Aus dem Verlagswesen der Ostschweiz und des Zürcher Oberlands entstanden ab 1800 mechanische Spinnereien, begünstigt durch Wasserkraft, billige Arbeitskräfte und die Kontinentalsperre, die englische Konkurrenz fernhielt. Um 1830 war die Schweiz nach Grossbritannien der zweitgrösste Baumwollverarbeiter Europas. Mit dem Aufkommen billiger Importe und dem Ersten Weltkrieg begann der Niedergang; heute ist die Branche bis auf Nischen wie technische Textilien verschwunden.
