Cottage industry

Cottage industry is gainful work carried out in one's own home on behalf of a principal. It was the backbone of Swiss textile and watch production and in the nineteenth century employed hundreds of thousands, mostly women and children, at the lowest wages. Long hours and the absence of protection led to the federal Factory Act of 1877, which however covered factories only; not until the Home Work Act of 1940, revised in 1981, were pay and conditions regulated. Today cottage work lives on in altered form as remote and platform work.

Heimarbeit ist die gewerbliche Erwerbsarbeit in der eigenen Wohnung auf Rechnung eines Auftraggebers. Sie war das Rückgrat der schweizerischen Textil- und Uhrenproduktion und beschäftigte im 19. Jahrhundert Hunderttausende, überwiegend Frauen und Kinder, zu tiefsten Löhnen. Lange Arbeitszeiten und fehlender Schutz führten 1877 zum eidgenössischen Fabrikgesetz, das allerdings nur Fabriken erfasste; erst das Heimarbeitsgesetz von 1940, revidiert 1981, regelte Lohn und Arbeitsbedingungen. Heute lebt Heimarbeit in veränderter Form als Telearbeit und Plattformarbeit fort.
