Culture of trust

A culture of trust denotes a working environment in which people perform in advance without every step being monitored. Trust substantially lowers the transaction costs of cooperation: where it is absent, control, hedging and documentation take its place. It grows out of predictability, professional competence and visible goodwill, and is lost faster than it is built. Trust is not the abandonment of control but its risk-aware limitation.

Vertrauenskultur bezeichnet ein Arbeitsumfeld, in dem Vorleistungen erbracht werden, ohne dass jeder Schritt kontrolliert wird. Vertrauen senkt die Transaktionskosten der Zusammenarbeit erheblich: Wo es fehlt, treten Kontrolle, Absicherung und Dokumentation an seine Stelle. Es entsteht durch Berechenbarkeit, Fachkompetenz und erkennbares Wohlwollen und geht schneller verloren, als es aufgebaut wird. Vertrauen ist kein Verzicht auf Kontrolle, sondern deren risikobewusste Beschränkung.
