Burnout denotes a state of deep emotional exhaustion, coupled with mental distance from one's work and a sense of reduced efficacy. The World Health Organization lists it in ICD-11 not as a disease but as a factor influencing health status, expressly confined to the occupational context. Its causes lie less in the volume of work than in the interplay of overload, lack of control, insufficient recognition and conflicts of values. Prevention is primarily a task for the organisation.

Burnout bezeichnet einen Zustand tiefer emotionaler Erschöpfung, verbunden mit innerer Distanzierung von der Arbeit und dem Gefühl verminderter Leistungsfähigkeit. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation führt ihn in der ICD-11 nicht als Krankheit, sondern als Faktor mit Einfluss auf den Gesundheitszustand, ausdrücklich beschränkt auf den beruflichen Kontext. Ursachen liegen weniger in der Arbeitsmenge als im Zusammenspiel von Überlastung, fehlender Kontrolle, mangelnder Anerkennung und Wertekonflikten. Prävention ist primär eine Aufgabe der Organisation.
