Coaching is the time-limited, process-oriented support of a person in working through professional questions. The coach gives no advice but helps the client to develop her own solutions; he is an expert in the process, not in the subject matter. It is to be distinguished from consulting, which supplies solutions, from therapy, which treats disorders, and from mentoring, which passes on experience. The occupational title is not protected, and quality accordingly varies widely.

Coaching ist die zeitlich befristete, prozessorientierte Begleitung einer Person bei der Bearbeitung beruflicher Fragen. Der Coach gibt keine Ratschläge, sondern hilft der Klientin, eigene Lösungen zu entwickeln; er ist Fachmann für den Prozess, nicht für die Sache. Abzugrenzen ist es von der Beratung, die Lösungen liefert, von der Therapie, die Störungen behandelt, und vom Mentoring, das Erfahrung weitergibt. Die Berufsbezeichnung ist nicht geschützt; die Qualität schwankt entsprechend stark.
