De-escalation comprises all measures that halt the intensification of a conflict and restore its manageability. In mediation these include ground rules, separating the parties in caucuses, slowing down communication, paraphrasing and reframing, acknowledging emotions, and establishing first small points of agreement. De-escalation is the precondition for negotiating about interests again.

Die Deeskalation umfasst alle Massnahmen, die die Verschärfung eines Konflikts stoppen und seine Bearbeitbarkeit wiederherstellen. In der Mediation gehören dazu Gesprächsregeln, die Trennung der Parteien in Einzelgesprächen, Verlangsamung der Kommunikation, Paraphrasieren und Reframing, die Anerkennung von Emotionen sowie das Herstellen erster kleiner Übereinstimmungen. Deeskalation ist Voraussetzung dafür, dass wieder über Interessen verhandelt werden kann.
