Dormant assets

Dormant assets are bank balances, securities accounts and insurance claims where contact with the beneficiary has been lost. They became politically explosive in the 1990s, when heirs of Holocaust victims claimed assets held with Swiss banks. The Volcker Committee examined millions of accounts, and in 1998 the major banks reached a settlement with Jewish organisations for 1.25 billion dollars. Since 2015 the Banking Act has obliged banks to publish dormant assets and, after fifty years, to liquidate them in favour of the Confederation.

Nachrichtenlose Vermögen sind Bankguthaben, Depots und Versicherungsansprüche, zu deren Berechtigten der Kontakt abgebrochen ist. Politisch brisant wurden sie in den 1990er-Jahren, als Erben von Holocaust-Opfern Guthaben bei Schweizer Banken einforderten. Der Volcker-Ausschuss untersuchte Millionen von Konten; 1998 schlossen die Grossbanken mit jüdischen Organisationen einen Vergleich über 1,25 Milliarden Dollar. Seit 2015 verpflichtet das Bankengesetz die Banken, nachrichtenlose Vermögen zu publizieren und nach 50 Jahren dem Bund zu liquidieren.
