Abverdienen was the discharge of the military service exemption tax through personal labour, for instance in a barracks. The term is historical: today's military service exemption tax is a purely monetary levy, and compelling someone to work it off would be incompatible with the Constitution.

Das Abverdienen war die Tilgung des Militärpflichtersatzes durch persönliche Arbeitsleistung, etwa in einer Kaserne. Der Begriff ist historisch: Die heutige Wehrpflichtersatzabgabe ist eine reine Geldleistung, und ein Zwang, sie durch Arbeit abzuverdienen, wäre mit der Verfassung nicht vereinbar.
