Emissions trading is the market-based instrument for reducing greenhouse gas emissions on the cap-and-trade principle: a cap fixes the permissible total quantity, allowances are allocated or auctioned and are tradable. The Swiss Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) covers large, greenhouse-gas-intensive installations and aviation and has been linked to the EU ETS since 2020. Its legal bases are the CO2 Act and the CO2 Ordinance.

Der Emissionshandel ist das marktwirtschaftliche Instrument zur Verminderung von Treibhausgasemissionen nach dem Cap-and-Trade-Prinzip: Eine Obergrenze legt die zulässige Gesamtmenge fest, Emissionsrechte werden zugeteilt oder versteigert und sind handelbar. Das Schweizer Emissionshandelssystem (EHS) erfasst grosse, treibhausgasintensive Anlagen und die Luftfahrt und ist seit 2020 mit dem EU-EHS verknüpft. Rechtsgrundlage sind das CO2-Gesetz und die CO2-Verordnung.
