Empowerment

Empowerment denotes widening employees' scope for action and decision, together with access to information and resources. Psychologically it works through the experience of meaning, competence, self-determination and impact. It raises satisfaction, innovation and customer orientation. It degenerates into an empty phrase where responsibility is transferred without authority, means and tolerance of error growing with it; in that case it merely means more work within the same limits.

Empowerment bezeichnet die Erweiterung des Handlungs- und Entscheidungsspielraums der Mitarbeitenden, verbunden mit dem Zugang zu Information und Ressourcen. Psychologisch wirkt es über das Erleben von Bedeutsamkeit, Kompetenz, Selbstbestimmung und Einfluss. Es erhöht Zufriedenheit, Innovation und Kundenorientierung. Es verkommt zur Floskel, wenn Verantwortung übertragen wird, ohne dass Befugnisse, Mittel und Fehlertoleranz mitwachsen; dann bedeutet es lediglich mehr Arbeit bei gleichem Spielraum.
