The general strike of 12 to 14 November 1918 was the greatest social conflict in modern Swiss history. Some 250,000 workers downed tools; the Olten Action Committee demanded, among other things, proportional representation, women's suffrage, the 48-hour week and old-age and disability insurance. The Federal Council mobilised the army, the strike was called off after three days, and three workers died at Grenchen. Several demands were met in the medium term; the strike shaped relations between capital and labour until the peace agreement of 1937.

Der Landesstreik vom 12. bis 14. November 1918 war der grösste soziale Konflikt der neueren Schweizer Geschichte. Rund 250 000 Arbeiter legten die Arbeit nieder; das Oltener Aktionskomitee forderte unter anderem Proportionalwahl, Frauenstimmrecht, die 48-Stunden-Woche und eine Alters- und Invalidenversicherung. Der Bundesrat bot die Armee auf, der Streik wurde nach drei Tagen abgebrochen, drei Arbeiter starben in Grenchen. Mittelfristig wurden mehrere Forderungen erfüllt; der Streik prägte das Verhältnis von Kapital und Arbeit bis zum Friedensabkommen von 1937.
