In 1943 Abraham Maslow arranged human needs in a hierarchy: physiological needs, safety, belonging, esteem and self-actualisation. Only once the lower levels are satisfied are the higher ones said to guide action. The model is extremely widespread because of its vividness, but it has scarcely been confirmed empirically: neither the fixed sequence nor the number of five levels could be substantiated. It serves as a prompt for thought, not as a predictive instrument.

Abraham Maslow ordnete menschliche Bedürfnisse 1943 in eine Hierarchie: physiologische Bedürfnisse, Sicherheit, soziale Zugehörigkeit, Wertschätzung und Selbstverwirklichung. Erst wenn die unteren Stufen befriedigt sind, sollen die höheren handlungsleitend werden. Das Modell ist wegen seiner Anschaulichkeit äusserst verbreitet, empirisch aber kaum bestätigt: Weder die feste Reihenfolge noch die Fünfzahl der Stufen liessen sich belegen. Es taugt als Denkanstoss, nicht als Prognoseinstrument.
