An initial coin offering is the public issue of tokens against cryptocurrencies or legal tender in order to finance a project. The boom of 2017 and 2018 made Switzerland, and Zug in particular, one of the leading locations worldwide. FINMA assesses each offering by the economic function of the tokens issued; depending on the qualification, anti-money-laundering, prospectus or licensing duties apply. Many offerings proved worthless or fraudulent, so the instrument has lost much of its importance.

Ein Initial Coin Offering ist die öffentliche Ausgabe von Token gegen Kryptowährungen oder gesetzliche Zahlungsmittel zur Finanzierung eines Projekts. Der Boom der Jahre 2017 und 2018 machte die Schweiz, namentlich Zug, zu einem der wichtigsten Standorte weltweit. Die FINMA beurteilt jedes Vorhaben nach der wirtschaftlichen Funktion der ausgegebenen Token; je nach Qualifikation greifen Geldwäscherei-, Prospekt- oder Bewilligungspflichten. Zahlreiche Vorhaben erwiesen sich als wertlos oder betrügerisch, weshalb das Instrument stark an Bedeutung verlor.
