The statute of limitations is the invalidation of a claim by the passage of time. It gives the debtor the defence that he can permanently refuse performance. Only claims can be subject to the statute of limitations. Other subjective rights do not become time-barred. In principle, therefore, all obligatory claims become time-barred.

Die Verjährung ist die Entkräftigung einer Forderung durch Zeitablauf. Sie gibt dem Schuldner die Einrede, Kraft derer er die Leistung auf Dauer verweigern kann. Gegenstand der Verjährung können nur Forderungen sein. Andere subjektive Rechte verjähren nicht. Grundsätzlich verjähren somit alle obligatorischen Forderungen.
