Mining denotes the creation of new blocks in a proof-of-work network: computers compete to solve a cryptographic puzzle and receive newly created units and the transaction fees. The process secures the network against manipulation but consumes a great deal of energy; the electricity used by the Bitcoin network is of the order of a medium-sized national economy. In Switzerland mining is economically unattractive because of high electricity prices.

Mining bezeichnet das Erzeugen neuer Blöcke in einem Proof-of-Work-Netzwerk: Rechner lösen im Wettbewerb eine kryptografische Aufgabe und erhalten dafür neu geschaffene Einheiten sowie die Transaktionsgebühren. Der Vorgang sichert das Netzwerk gegen Manipulation, verbraucht aber sehr viel Energie; der Stromverbrauch des Bitcoin-Netzwerks bewegt sich in der Grössenordnung mittlerer Volkswirtschaften. In der Schweiz ist Mining wegen der hohen Strompreise wirtschaftlich unattraktiv.
