Moral insanity

Moral insanity is a historical term of nineteenth-century psychiatry for persons of sometimes good intelligence with a largely absent moral sense: devoid of all ethics, they acknowledge only their own interests and inclinations and rebel against whatever opposes them. In forensic debate the term was significant for criminal responsibility; modern psychiatry has replaced it with the concept of dissocial (antisocial) personality disorder.

Moral insanity ist ein historischer Begriff der Psychiatrie des 19. Jahrhunderts für Menschen mit mitunter guter Intelligenz bei weitgehendem Fehlen moralischer Empfindung: Bar jeder Ethik anerkennen sie nur die eigenen Interessen und Neigungen und lehnen sich gegen alles auf, was diesen entgegensteht. In der forensischen Diskussion war der Begriff für die Zurechnungsfähigkeit bedeutsam; die moderne Psychiatrie hat ihn durch das Konzept der dissozialen Persönlichkeitsstörung abgelöst.
