Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is the mediator's restatement of a party's utterance in the mediator's own words. It shows the speaking party that it has been understood, allows corrections, slows down escalated communication and helps the other side truly hear the opposing point of view for the first time. Together with active listening, summarising and verbalising emotions, it is one of the basic techniques of mediation.

Das Paraphrasieren ist das Wiedergeben einer Aussage in eigenen Worten durch den Mediator. Es zeigt der sprechenden Partei, dass sie verstanden wurde, ermöglicht Korrekturen, verlangsamt eskalierte Kommunikation und hilft der Gegenseite, den Standpunkt der anderen erstmals wirklich zu hören. Zusammen mit aktivem Zuhören, Zusammenfassen und Verbalisieren von Gefühlen gehört es zu den Grundtechniken der Mediation.
