Party self-determination

Party self-determination is the principle that responsibility for the substance of the resolution lies with the parties alone. They define the issues, develop and evaluate options and decide on the settlement. The mediator is responsible only for the process. Informed decision-making is a prerequisite; the parties may involve external professionals such as lawyers or tax advisers for this purpose.

Die Eigenverantwortung der Parteien (Selbstbestimmung) ist das Prinzip, dass die Konfliktlösung inhaltlich allein den Parteien obliegt. Sie definieren die Themen, entwickeln und bewerten Optionen und entscheiden über die Einigung. Der Mediator verantwortet nur das Verfahren. Voraussetzung ist informierte Entscheidungsfindung; die Parteien können dazu externe Fachpersonen wie Anwälte oder Steuerberater beiziehen.
