Proto-industrialisation

Proto-industrialisation denotes the pre-factory but already market-oriented mass production of goods in the countryside, which preceded industrialisation proper. In Switzerland it spread from the seventeenth century across much of the east, the Mittelland and the Jura. It decoupled population growth from the carrying capacity of agriculture, created capital, distribution networks and a pool of skilled labour, and explains why a landlocked country poor in raw materials industrialised early. The term was coined in the 1970s and remains contested in scholarship.

Protoindustrialisierung bezeichnet die vorfabrikmässige, aber bereits marktorientierte gewerbliche Massenproduktion auf dem Land, die der eigentlichen Industrialisierung vorausging. In der Schweiz erfasste sie ab dem 17. Jahrhundert weite Teile der Ostschweiz, des Mittellands und des Juras. Sie entkoppelte das Bevölkerungswachstum von der landwirtschaftlichen Tragfähigkeit, schuf Kapital, Absatznetze und ein qualifiziertes Arbeitskräftereservoir und erklärt, weshalb ein rohstoffarmes Binnenland früh industrialisierte. Der Begriff wurde in den 1970er-Jahren geprägt und ist in der Forschung nicht unbestritten.
