Putting-out system

From the seventeenth to the nineteenth century the putting-out system was the dominant form of rural textile production. An urban merchant supplied raw material and tools to families working at home, who spun and wove in their own parlours, and he bore the marketing and the price risk. The peasant families remained formally independent but fell into economic dependence. The system mobilised labour in the pre-Alpine and mountain regions, carried the proto-industrialisation of eastern Switzerland and the Zurich Oberland, and was displaced by the mechanised factory after 1800.

Das Verlagssystem war vom 17. bis ins 19. Jahrhundert die vorherrschende Organisationsform der ländlichen Textilproduktion. Ein städtischer Verleger lieferte Rohstoff und Werkzeug an Heimarbeiterfamilien, die in ihren Stuben spannen und webten, und übernahm Absatz und Preisrisiko. Die Bauernfamilien blieben formell selbständig, gerieten aber in wirtschaftliche Abhängigkeit. Das System erschloss die Arbeitskraft der Voralpen- und Berggebiete, trug die Protoindustrialisierung namentlich der Ostschweiz und des Zürcher Oberlands und wurde ab 1800 von der mechanisierten Fabrik verdrängt.
