Quartz crisis

The quartz crisis refers to the collapse of the Swiss watch industry between 1974 and 1985. Japanese and American manufacturers established the electronic quartz watch, while the Swiss sector, geared to mechanical movements and to établissage, reacted too late. Employment fell from some 90,000 to below 30,000 and many firms disappeared. The restructuring led in 1983 to the merger of ASUAG and SSIH into what became the Swatch Group; the success of the Swatch and the repositioning in the luxury segment began the recovery.

Als Quarzkrise wird der Einbruch der schweizerischen Uhrenindustrie zwischen 1974 und 1985 bezeichnet. Japanische und amerikanische Hersteller setzten die elektronische Quarzuhr durch, während die auf Mechanik und Établissage ausgerichtete Schweizer Branche zu spät reagierte. Die Beschäftigung fiel von rund 90 000 auf unter 30 000, zahlreiche Betriebe verschwanden. Die Sanierung führte 1983 zur Fusion von ASUAG und SSIH zur späteren Swatch Group; der Erfolg der Swatch und die Neupositionierung im Luxussegment leiteten die Erholung ein.
