Silk industry

From the sixteenth to the early twentieth century the silk industry was a pillar of the urban economy of Zurich and Basel. Zurich specialised in silk cloth, Basel in silk ribbons, which were produced by home workers in the Basel countryside. It generated great fortunes that later flowed into banking and mechanical engineering. After the First World War markets and raw material supplies collapsed and man-made fibres displaced natural silk; by the 1950s the sector had almost entirely disappeared.

Die Seidenindustrie war vom 16. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert ein Pfeiler der städtischen Wirtschaft von Zürich und Basel. Zürich spezialisierte sich auf Seidenstoffe, Basel auf Seidenbänder, deren Produktion im Baselbiet in Heimarbeit erfolgte. Sie brachte grosse Vermögen hervor, die später in Banken und Maschinenindustrie flossen. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg brachen Absatzmärkte und Rohstoffversorgung weg, die Kunstfaser verdrängte die Naturseide; bis in die 1950er-Jahre war die Branche fast vollständig verschwunden.
