Social partnership denotes the institutionalised cooperation of employers' associations and trade unions in regulating working conditions, supplemented by their involvement in legislation through the consultation procedure. It rests on the peace agreement of 1937, on collective labour agreements and on joint committees. The state holds back and merely declares agreements generally binding. The model explains Switzerland's very low strike rate; it is under pressure from falling union membership and the growing flexibility of employment relationships.

Sozialpartnerschaft bezeichnet die institutionalisierte Zusammenarbeit von Arbeitgeberverbänden und Gewerkschaften bei der Regelung der Arbeitsbedingungen, ergänzt durch den Einbezug in die Gesetzgebung über das Vernehmlassungsverfahren. Sie stützt sich auf das Friedensabkommen von 1937, auf Gesamtarbeitsverträge und auf paritätische Kommissionen. Der Staat hält sich zurück und erklärt Verträge lediglich für allgemeinverbindlich. Das Modell erklärt die tiefe Streikquote der Schweiz; es steht unter Druck durch sinkenden gewerkschaftlichen Organisationsgrad und die Flexibilisierung der Arbeitsverhältnisse.
