Transformational leadership seeks to win employees over to a shared goal beyond mere reciprocity. Bernard Bass distinguishes four components: idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualised consideration. Empirically it shows the strongest associations of any leadership style with commitment, job satisfaction and performance. The criticism is its proximity to charismatic seduction: the style works even where the goals are questionable, and it presupposes a leader of integrity.

Transformationale Führung will Mitarbeitende über die blosse Gegenleistung hinaus für ein gemeinsames Ziel gewinnen. Bernard Bass unterscheidet vier Komponenten: Vorbildwirkung, inspirierende Motivation, intellektuelle Anregung und individuelle Förderung. Empirisch zeigt sie unter allen Führungsstilen die stärksten Zusammenhänge mit Engagement, Arbeitszufriedenheit und Leistung. Kritisch angemerkt wird die Nähe zu charismatischer Verführung: Der Stil wirkt auch dann, wenn die Ziele fragwürdig sind, und setzt eine integre Führungsperson voraus.
