Washington Agreement

The Washington Agreement of 25 May 1946 ended the dispute between the Allies and Switzerland over gold acquired from the German Reichsbank during the Second World War and over the administration of German assets. Switzerland paid 250 million francs without acknowledging any legal obligation and in return obtained the release of its blocked assets in the United States. The agreement allowed a swift return to world trade, but left the question of looted gold open and returned to occupy Switzerland in the 1990s.

Das Washingtoner Abkommen vom 25. Mai 1946 beendete den Konflikt der Alliierten mit der Schweiz über die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs von der Reichsbank übernommenen Goldbestände und die Verwaltung deutscher Vermögen. Die Schweiz zahlte 250 Millionen Franken, ohne eine Rechtspflicht anzuerkennen, und erhielt dafür die Aufhebung der Blockierung ihrer Guthaben in den USA. Das Abkommen erlaubte den raschen Wiedereinstieg in den Welthandel, liess die Frage des Raubgoldes jedoch offen und beschäftigte die Schweiz bis in die 1990er-Jahre erneut.
