The watchmaking industry emerged in Geneva from the sixteenth century and spread along the Jura arc as far as Schaffhausen. For a long time it was Switzerland's strongest export sector, highly specialised and organised along cartel lines. The quartz crisis of the 1970s halved employment and led to concentration in a few groups. Since the 1990s the sector has prospered again through its positioning in the luxury and prestige segment; it is subject to the Swissness legislation and remains dependent on the Chinese market.

Die Uhrenindustrie entstand ab dem 16. Jahrhundert in Genf und breitete sich über den Jurabogen bis nach Schaffhausen aus. Sie war lange die exportstärkste Branche der Schweiz, hoch spezialisiert und kartellartig organisiert. Die Quarzkrise der 1970er-Jahre halbierte die Beschäftigung und führte zur Konzentration auf wenige Konzerne. Seit den 1990er-Jahren ist die Branche mit der Positionierung im Luxus- und Prestigesegment wieder erfolgreich; sie unterliegt der Swissness-Gesetzgebung und leidet unter der Abhängigkeit vom chinesischen Markt.
