Cold storage is the keeping of private keys on a medium with no network connection, such as a hardware wallet or paper. It protects against attacks over the internet but requires physical security and a backup: whoever loses the key loses access for good. Its counterpart is hot storage with a permanent network connection, which allows faster transactions and is exposed to greater risk of attack. Professional custodians keep the bulk of their holdings in cold storage.

Kalte Verwahrung bezeichnet die Aufbewahrung privater Schlüssel auf einem Datenträger ohne Netzverbindung, etwa auf einem Hardware-Wallet oder auf Papier. Sie schützt vor Angriffen über das Internet, verlangt aber physische Sicherung und ein Backup: Wer den Schlüssel verliert, verliert den Zugriff endgültig. Das Gegenstück ist die heisse Verwahrung mit ständiger Netzverbindung, die schnellere Transaktionen erlaubt und höheren Angriffsrisiken ausgesetzt ist. Professionelle Verwahrer halten den Grossteil der Bestände kalt.
