Cognitive biases are systematic, predictable deviations of judgment from rational standards. They arise because thinking falls back on heuristics that are usually useful in everyday life but mislead in complex situations. Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky laid the foundations of their study. For leadership they matter above all in personnel decisions, investments and forecasts. They cannot be trained away, but they can be contained by procedure, such as criteria fixed in advance, structured interviews and counter-checking.

Kognitive Verzerrungen sind systematische, vorhersehbare Abweichungen des Urteilens von rationalen Massstäben. Sie entstehen, weil das Denken auf Heuristiken zurückgreift, die im Alltag meist nützlich sind, in komplexen Lagen aber in die Irre führen. Daniel Kahneman und Amos Tversky legten die Grundlagen ihrer Erforschung. Für die Führung sind sie besonders bei Personalentscheiden, Investitionen und Prognosen relevant. Sie lassen sich nicht abtrainieren, wohl aber durch Verfahren eindämmen, etwa durch vorab festgelegte Kriterien, strukturierte Interviews und Gegenprüfung.
