Confirmation bias

Confirmation bias denotes the tendency to seek, interpret and recall information so that it supports one's existing view, and to overlook or discount contradicting evidence. It operates unconsciously and affects experts as much as laypeople; greater knowledge affords no protection but supplies better arguments for the preconceived opinion. The countermeasures are the deliberate search for disconfirming evidence and appointing someone to argue the opposing case.

Der Bestätigungsfehler bezeichnet die Neigung, Informationen so zu suchen, zu deuten und zu erinnern, dass sie die eigene Auffassung stützen, und widersprechende Belege zu übersehen oder abzuwerten. Er wirkt unbewusst und trifft Fachleute ebenso wie Laien; grösseres Wissen schützt nicht, sondern liefert bessere Argumente für die vorgefasste Meinung. Gegenmassnahmen sind die bewusste Suche nach widerlegenden Belegen und die Bestimmung einer Person, die den Gegenstandpunkt zu vertreten hat.
