Conflict diagnosis is the systematic analysis of a conflict before and during mediation: the parties involved and their relationships, the issues in dispute, the types of conflict, the degree of escalation, its history and previous attempts at resolution. It informs the assessment of whether mediation is suitable, the setting (single or co-mediation, involvement of experts) and the intervention strategy. Its tools include preliminary meetings, conflict maps and escalation models.

Die Konfliktdiagnose ist die systematische Analyse eines Konflikts vor und während der Mediation: Beteiligte und ihre Beziehungen, Streitgegenstände, Konfliktarten, Eskalationsgrad, Verlauf und bisherige Lösungsversuche. Sie entscheidet mit über die Eignung der Mediation, das Setting (Einzel- oder Co-Mediation, Einbezug von Fachpersonen) und die Interventionsstrategie. Instrumente sind Vorgespräche, Konfliktlandkarten und Eskalationsmodelle.
