A crypto exchange is a trading platform for the purchase and sale of crypto-assets. Centralised exchanges hold their clients' balances and match orders in their own book; decentralised exchanges effect the swap through smart contracts without taking custody of the keys. Anyone exchanging or holding crypto-assets commercially in Switzerland is a financial intermediary subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Act. Collapses such as that of FTX in 2022 have exposed the counterparty risks of centralised providers.

Eine Kryptobörse ist eine Handelsplattform für den Kauf und Verkauf von Kryptowerten. Zentrale Börsen verwahren die Guthaben ihrer Kunden und führen die Aufträge in einem eigenen Orderbuch zusammen; dezentrale Börsen wickeln den Tausch über Smart Contracts ab, ohne die Schlüssel zu übernehmen. Wer in der Schweiz gewerbsmässig Kryptowerte tauscht oder verwahrt, ist Finanzintermediär und untersteht dem Geldwäschereigesetz. Zusammenbrüche wie jener von FTX im Jahr 2022 haben die Gegenparteirisiken zentraler Anbieter deutlich gemacht.
