Empathy is the ability to comprehend another person's inner state. A distinction is drawn between cognitive empathy, the understanding of a perspective, and affective empathy, the sharing of feeling. For leadership the cognitive form is chiefly useful: it allows reactions to be anticipated without being emotionally swept along. Excessive fellow-feeling leads to exhaustion and makes necessary but unpleasant decisions harder.

Empathie ist die Fähigkeit, den inneren Zustand einer anderen Person nachzuvollziehen. Zu unterscheiden sind die kognitive Empathie, also das Verstehen der Perspektive, und die affektive, also das Mitempfinden. Für die Führung ist vor allem die kognitive Form nützlich: Sie erlaubt es, Reaktionen zu antizipieren, ohne emotional mitgerissen zu werden. Übermässiges Mitfühlen führt zu Erschöpfung und erschwert notwendige, aber unangenehme Entscheide.
